The procedure for changing your name
The surname and first name are an essential element of individual identity, linked to filiation and family history. However, it is possible, under certain conditions, to request a change of name. This approach may be motivated by personal, family or professional reasons.
At birth, the child bears the name of his parents. If the parents are married or are in agreement, the child can take the surname of the father, the mother or a combination of the two names. In the case of full adoption, the child takes the surname of his or her adoptive parents. In the case of a simple adoption, the child can keep their original name or take the surname of the adoptive parents as well.
There is a principle of immutability of the name, that is, it cannot be changed without a legitimate reason recognized by law. However, there are exceptional circumstances in which a name change may be requested, for example in the event of a deterioration of the name or for important family reasons.
Conditions for changing your name
The procedure for changing your name is strictly regulated by law in order to avoid abuse. The applicant must demonstrate a legitimate interest. The changing of a name requires a rigorous administrative procedure, which includes detailed procedures and strict control by the authorities. It must be verified that this modification does not infringe the rights of third parties or interested parties.
Once the name change is approved, the vital records (birth certificate, marriage certificate, etc.) are updated to reflect the new name. The same applies to identity documents (national identity card, passport, etc.).
